Reactor was a level I designed for the Gears 5 DLC. Given that Gears levels typically follow a rectilinear form, I wanted to challenge myself by creating a circular map. Although it was challenging, it turned out to be one of my favorite projects.
The map consists primarily of two concentric circles, promoting close-quarters combat. An elevated structure at the center serves as both an overlook and a shortcut. Embracing the circular theme, I incorporated a dynamic element that periodically obscures the overlook, providing players with opportunities for advantageous flanking maneuvers.
Bunker was inspired by a D-Day type invasion. Utilizing dragon's teeth and other battlefield relics, players can mount a successful charge up the imposing slope. The two base structures overlooking the vista were designed from a broken cargo ship, with the bow and stern serving as sniper roosts.
Ephyra was initially designed as an idyllic farmhouse surrounded by fields of tall, overgrown grass to conceal player approaches. Due to performance concerns, we had to move away from those ideas, but the central structure that would become the hotel still remains. In Ephyra, I aimed to explore more residential elements, such as wrap-around porches that allow for quick flanking maneuvers.
