I was tasked with creating a replacement for a poorly performing POI that was taking up a large part of the BR biome Drought. The only real goal was something fun with unique gameplay experiences but with a faux western theme.
With that in mind, I quickly got to work and after a bit of research landed on the most western things I could find: a church, a saloon, a mine, a train, and a processing center for the whole thing to tie it together. I built the church in such a way that it could easily become some other building incase, which it later became a train station.
My goal was to limit the scope of the buildings to roughly three structures and then use an organic rock set to generate the mines for some easy wins in scoping. As far as unique gameplay, I didn't have a lot of room for a train to move but was determined to solve it. I eventually discovered that for the BR, we have some old-school teleporters we call level portals that you can see/shoot through. I able to script a looping train that would forever go through a portal, with players on it no less, and come out another portal just up the track.
I also took this idea and flipped it on its side, placing two giant level portals so that they occupy most of the ceiling and floor of the mine's large atrium. This allows players to cross the abyss by falling forward and catching enemies by surprise. In order to link the two ideas, I added a conveyor belt that drives players from the train and exterior town to the inner depths of the rock.
